At Lodge Primary, we prioritise and invest significantly in the Early Years. Our EYFS has been identified as a setting which demonstrates good practice for other Sandwell schools. ‘Children have access to high-quality interactions, resources and environments. Clearly defined areas, both indoors and outdoors, which have been carefully planned to ensure purposeful learning takes place. Children are well supported to develop their language skills. There are a wealth of learning opportunities available at any one time.’ (Sandwell Early Years Advisor, Joanne Rudge, EYFS Visit Report 2026)

Our Early Years provision is language-rich and intentionally designed to give children a successful start to their education and increasingly strong foundations for later learning. Each area of provision has a clear purpose, defined expectations and accessible resources. Areas are labelled consistently, vocabulary is displayed and visual prompts support children’s independence, self-regulation and ability to maintain the environment.

Staff have a clearer understanding of what children should be learning in each area, how adults should interact and how provision supports communication and language, early literacy, mathematics, physical development, self-regulation and wider curriculum knowledge. High-quality interactions are an increasing strength. Staff observe, wait, listen, model vocabulary, extend children’s thinking and engage purposefully in play.

The curriculum in EYFS is increasingly well sequenced and ambitious. Staff use assessment effectively to plan next steps, adapt provision and ensure that children receive timely support. This is resulting in accelerated progress for a greater proportion of children. As reflective practitioners, staff follow the interests of the children and plan enrichment opportunities which include trips, visitors and a range of concrete experiences.

Children are explicitly taught routines and expectations enabling them to use the environment independently, safely and with sustained engagement. Children’s personal, social and emotional development is supported well. The environment includes a sensory and self-regulation area where children are taught how to identify emotions, use strategies and return to learning. British Values is an established part of our EYFS curriculum and throughout the day, children learn about how to treat each other with respect.

At Lodge, Parents and Carers are encouraged and supported with engaging in their children’s early education. We have an effective transition offer so that all parents and children are met through enrolment meetings, home visits and stay and play sessions. Parents and Carers are invited to attend regular workshops for reading and maths.
